Production Process of High-Purity Manganese Carbonate
Raw materials: high-purity manganese chloride or high-purity manganese sulfate + ammonium bicarbonate
I. Core Reaction Equations
- Manganese sulfate route:
MnSO₄ + 2NH₄HCO₃ → MnCO₃↓ + (NH₄)₂SO₄ + CO₂↑ + H₂O
- Manganese chloride route:
MnCl₂ + 2NH₄HCO₃ → MnCO₃↓ + 2NH₄Cl + CO₂↑ + H₂O
II. Production Process of High-Purity MnCO₃
1. Raw Material Preparation (Preparation of High-Purity Manganese Solution)
- Dissolve high-purity MnSO₄·H₂O or high-purity MnCl₂·4H₂O in deionized water to prepare a solution with 50–150 g/L Mn²⁺.
- Adjust pH to 2.0–4.0 (dilute H₂SO₄ for MnSO₄; dilute HCl for MnCl₂), heat to dissolve, and filter to remove insoluble impurities.
2. Deep Purification (Key to High Purity)
- Heavy metal removal: Add Na₂S or (NH₄)₂S, maintain pH 6.0–7.0, stir for 1–2 h, then filter after standing.
- Calcium and magnesium removal: Add oxalic acid/oxalate (150–500% of theoretical amount), adjust pH 5.5–7.0
stir for 1–3 h, then filter.
- Or add Ca/Mg complexing agent (EDTA, etc.) at pH 4.0–6.0, then perform fine filtration after complexation.
3. Carbonation Precipitation (Core Reaction)
- Prepare saturated or 15–25% NH₄HCO₃ solution, and add it slowly by concurrent flow into the manganese solution.
- Temperature: 30–60°C (preferably 40–50°C), stir for 1–3 h.
- Endpoint control: pH 6.5–7.5, residual Mn²⁺ < 0.1 g/L (equimolar reaction).
- Maintain a closed / slight positive pressure throughout the reaction to reduce NH₃ volatilization and CO₂ escape.
4. Solid-Liquid Separation
- Centrifuge or vacuum filter to obtain MnCO₃ filter cake.
- The filtrate containing (NH₄)₂SO₄ or NH₄Cl can be recycled.
5. Washing (Removal of Soluble Impurities)
- Wash with deionized water at 80–100°C at a solid-liquid ratio of 1:5, 2–3 times, 40–80 min each time.
- Final wash with anhydrous ethanol once to accelerate drying and prevent agglomeration.
6. Drying and Pulverization
- Vacuum / hot air drying: 80–95°C for 4–16 h until moisture < 0.5%.
- Jet mill and sieve to obtain high-purity MnCO₃ (purity ≥ 99.9%).
III. Key Process Points (Guarantee of High Purity)
- Raw materials must be electronic-grade / high-purity grade to avoid impurity introduction.
- Maintain closed system and anti-oxidation throughout the process, as Mn²⁺ is easily oxidized to Mn⁴⁺.
- Concurrent feeding with controlled temperature and pH ensures uniform particle size and low impurities.
- Hot water + ethanol washing thoroughly removes Cl⁻/SO₄²⁻ and NH₄⁺.
IV. Comparison of Two Routes
- Manganese sulfate route: Byproduct (NH₄)₂SO₄ (easily crystallized and recovered), low Cl⁻ content, suitable for lithium battery materials.
- Manganese chloride route: Byproduct NH₄Cl (high solubility, slightly harder to recover), lower cost, suitable for general high-purity applications.
